Neck pain is a common problem that can affect office workers, athletes, drivers and anyone who spends long periods in the same position.

Pain may be felt directly in the neck, but it can also be associated with stiffness, shoulder tension or discomfort between the shoulder blades.

At Ostéopathie NDG Vincent Beaugrand-Champagne, the goal is to assess the different structures that may contribute to your discomfort and provide an approach adapted to your situation.

Neck pain can be influenced by several factors, including:

  • reduced cervical spine mobility;

  • muscle tension in the neck and shoulders;

  • reduced upper-back mobility;

  • prolonged computer work;

  • repetitive movements;

  • sports activities;

  • a recent increase in physical activity;

  • stress-related muscle tension.

The neck works closely with the shoulders, shoulder blades, thoracic spine and rib cage. Reduced mobility in one of these regions may sometimes change how the neck moves and handles physical stress.

What Symptoms Can Be Associated With Neck Pain?

Neck pain can present in different ways.

Some people mainly experience:

  • neck stiffness;

  • difficulty turning the head;

  • pain during rotation, side bending or extension;

  • tension in the upper trapezius muscles;

  • discomfort between the shoulder blades;

  • muscle fatigue after several hours of work.

In some cases, headaches may also be associated with cervical muscle tension.

Neck Pain and Computer Work

Office work often involves long periods of sitting.

When the head remains in the same position for long periods, the muscles of the neck and shoulder region must work continuously to maintain that position.

Changing position regularly, adjusting your workstation and taking short movement breaks can help reduce some of these stresses.

If neck pain continues despite these changes, an assessment may help identify the mechanical factors contributing to your symptoms.

Neck Pain in Athletes

The cervical spine can also be placed under significant stress during sports.

Combat sports, hockey, skiing, weight training and activities involving rapid trunk rotation may increase the demands placed on the neck and shoulders.

Good mobility in the upper back, rib cage and shoulders can help distribute these forces more effectively.

For this reason, an osteopathic assessment may examine several regions of the body rather than focusing only on the painful area.

How Can Osteopathy Help?

Osteopathic care uses different manual techniques aimed at improving mobility and reducing tension that may contribute to discomfort.

Depending on the assessment, treatment may involve:

  • the cervical spine;

  • the shoulders;

  • the shoulder blades;

  • the thoracic spine;

  • the rib cage;

  • associated muscles and fascial structures.

Mobility or strengthening exercises may also be recommended to help maintain improvements between appointments.

When Should You Consult for Neck Pain?

An osteopathic assessment may be appropriate when your neck pain:

  • lasts for several days;

  • keeps returning;

  • limits your ability to turn or move your head;

  • develops after long periods of computer work;

  • prevents you from participating normally in sports;

  • is associated with significant shoulder or upper-back tension.

Some situations require prompt medical evaluation. Neck pain associated with significant trauma, progressive arm or hand weakness, major loss of sensation, balance problems, fever or other unusual symptoms should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
