Osteopath back Pain and Sciatica: Could Your Organs Be Involved?

When we think of back pain or sciatica, we usually assume it comes from muscles, joints, or nerves. But sometimes the root of the problem is deeper — quite literally. Your internal organs (like the bladder, kidneys, and intestines) can cause pain that radiates to the lower back, hips, or even down the leg.
How Do Organs Cause Back Pain?
Your organs are surrounded by connective tissue (fascia) and linked to your nervous system. When there’s tension, inflammation, or reduced mobility in an organ, it can affect nearby muscles or refer pain to different areas of the body.
Here are some common examples:
A bladder that’s irritated or under stress may create a deep ache in the pelvis or lower back.
Kidneys under strain may cause one-sided lower back pain.
Colon dysfunction, such as bloating or constipation, can cause discomfort in the lower abdomen and lower back.
A tight psoas muscle, which is affected by both the kidneys and intestines, can compress nerves and mimic sciatic nerve pain.
This type of pain is often vague, hard to describe, and persistent — and it may not respond well to stretching, exercise, or traditional massage therapy.
How Osteopathy Can Help
As an osteopath for back pain and sciatica or abdominal pain in NDG, I take a whole-body approach. I assess not only the spine and muscles, but also the mobility of the internal organs through a gentle technique called visceral osteopathy.
Visceral osteopathy for back pain and sciatica helps release tension in the organs and surrounding fascia. When the organs move freely, the spine and pelvis also move better — and pain often decreases.
I regularly work with clients who have:
Chronic lower back pain with no clear mechanical cause
Discomfort around the hips or pelvis
Recurring digestive issues and abdominal tension
Sciatic-type pain linked to visceral or fascial tension

If you’re dealing with pain that doesn’t respond to conventional treatment, osteopathy may offer relief by addressing deeper patterns of tension in the body.
