Neck Pain and Cell Phone Use: What If the Real Cause Comes From the Hips

Introduction

Neck pain is often blamed on cell phone use and the forward flexed position of the head. This explanation has become very popular among patients and health professionals alike. However, in clinical osteopathic practice in NDG, a different pattern appears repeatedly: neck pain is often the result of hip and pelvic dysfunction rather than the neck itself.

As an osteopath and massage therapist in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, I frequently observe that the cervical spine compensates for restrictions located lower in the body, particularly in the pelvis and sacroiliac region.

Cell Phone Use Is Not the Main Cause of Neck Pain.

Looking down at a phone does place the cervical spine in flexion, but this position alone does not automatically cause pain.

The human body is designed to move and adapt.👉 Occasional cervical flexion is normal and not harmful.

Problems arise when:

  • pelvic posture is already altered

  • the hips lack mobility

  • the pelvis is unstable or asymmetrical

  • the cervical spine is forced to compensate continuously

In this context, cell phone use becomes a trigger, not the root cause of neck pain.

The Key Role of the Hips and Pelvis in Neck Pain

The spine functions as a global chain of compensation. When pelvic mobility or stability is compromised:

  • the lumbar spine adapts

  • the thoracic spine becomes rigid

  • the cervical spine becomes overloaded or hypermobile

In osteopathic assessments, we frequently identify:

  • sacroiliac joint restrictions

  • hip asymmetry

  • reduced pelvic dissociation

  • secondary muscular tension in the neck

Treating the neck alone often addresses the symptom, not the cause.

Cervical Exercises: Helpful but Often Incomplete

More therapists—especially in the United States—are now prescribing neck strengthening and mobility exercises to manage neck pain.

While these exercises can be beneficial:

  • if the pelvis is not evaluated

  • if hip mobility is not restored

  • if sacroiliac stability is not addressed

results are often temporary or incomplete.

A strong cervical spine cannot compensate long term for:

  • pelvic instability

  • restricted hips

  • poor postural coordination

A Global Osteopathic Approach to Neck Pain

Osteopathy focuses not only on pain relief but on understanding why pain develops.

Effective management of neck pain often includes:

  • evaluation of the pelvis and sacroiliac joints

  • assessment of hip mobility

  • coordination between lumbar, thoracic, and cervical regions

  • fascial treatment

  • individualized exercises addressing the whole body, not just the neck

The neck is rarely the starting point.

Osteopathy for Neck Pain in NDG

At Osteopathy and Massage Therapy NDG – Vincent Beaugrand-Champagne, located in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, neck pain is approached globally.

Common reasons for consultation include:

  • neck pain

  • cervical stiffness

  • postural neck pain

  • cervicogenic headaches

  • work-related or phone-related discomfort

Conveniently located near:

  • NDG

  • Côte-Saint-Luc

  • Montréal-Ouest

Conclusion

Cell phones are not the enemy. The real question is: why can’t the neck tolerate certain positions anymore?

In many cases, the answer lies below the neck.

A global osteopathic approach allows treatment of the true cause, not just the symptoms.
